La conversion au protestantisme dans le Nordeste brésilien
Le protestantisme a revêtu dans le Nordeste brésilien certaines caractéristiques
particulières qui le différencient du reste du pays. On a ici cherché à analyser les
explications sociologiques apportées à ce phénomène dans la littérature
spécialisée. Deux d’entre elles ressortent : la migration (et
l’urbanisation consécutive) et la modernisation. On analyse le pour et le contre de
ces explications afin de construire finalement les bases d’une nouvelle
compréhension qui soit capable d’intégrer la vision de la religion comme système
symbolique, et en même temps comme l’expression d’un jeu d’intérêts des
agents religieux.
On peut alors comprendre ce que signifie se convertir au protestantisme dans le Nordeste,
et quelles sont les difficultés qui surgissent dans ce processus, responsables de
l’actuel panorama.

O protestantismo assumiu no Nordeste do Brasil certas características peculiares que o
diferenciam do protestantismo no restante do país. Neste trabalho procurou-se analisar as
explicações sociológicas dadas a esse fenômeno na literatura especializada. Duas delas
receberam destaque : a migração (e conseqüente urbanização) e a modernização.
Foram analisados os prós e os contras dessas explicações para poder-se construir,
finalmente, as bases para uma outra explicação, que fosse capaz de integrar a visão da
religião como sistema simbólico, e ao mesmo tempo como a expressão de um jogo de
interesses dos agentes religiosos.
A partir dessa base foi possível compreender o que significa se converter ao
protestantismo no Nordeste e quais foram as dificuldades que surgiram nesse processo,
responsáveis pelo quadro atual.
Conversion to Protestantism in the Nordeste Region of Brazil
In the Nordeste region of Brazil, Protestantism has taken on certain particular
characteristics which differentiate it from the rest of the country. Here, we have sought
to analyse the sociological explanations for this phenomenon to be found in specialised
literature. Two of these explanations stand out : migration
(and subsequent urbanisation) and modernisation. We analyse the pros and the cons of these
explanations and finally set out the basis of a new understanding, which can include the
vision of religion as a symbolic system and at the same time as the expression of a game
of interests for religious agents.
We can thus understand what it means to convert to Protestantism in the Nordeste and what
difficulties – responsible for the present situation – arise in this
process.
