Ce que l'on sait, ce que l'on cherche sur le protestantisme au
Portugal
Malgré divers efforts pour mieux connaître l'histoire des minorités religieuses au
Portugal, d'importantes lacunes subsistent qu'il serait urgent de combler. En effet, il
semble que l'on connaisse mieux la période pendant laquelle les minorités étaient
systématiquement et intensément persécutées que les époques les plus récentes,
pendant lesquelles se sont ouverts quelques espaces de respiration et de tolérance, et se
sont répandues dans le pays des pratiques cultuelles et liturgiques pouvant préoccuper
l'édifice conservateur supportant le catholicisme portugais traditionnel.
Est-ce si paradoxal ? Peut-être pas. Cet article retrace le chemin parcouru jusqu'à
présent, pour limité qu'il soit, et met en évidence quelques-unes des questions les
plus évidentes qui apparaissent à l'horizon de la recherche, en tenant compte des
transformations rapides des pratiques socioculturelles dans le Portugal d'aujourd'hui.

Muito embora tenham sido desenvolvidos esforços variados no sentido de se conhecer melhor
a história das minorias religiosas em Portugal, persistem lacunas importantes que urge
colmatar. Com efeito, parece conhecer-se melhor o período em que as minorias eram alvo
sistemático de intensas acções persecutórias, do que as épocas mais recentes, em que
foram criadas algumas aberturas e apareceram maiores espaços de tolerância,
difundindo-se e espalhando-se pelo País práticas cultuais e litúrgicas susceptíveis de
preocuparem o edifício conservador que sustentava o catolicismo tradicional português.
Será isto um paradoxo ? Talvez não. Nesta comunicação se tenta-se esboçar o
caminho percorrido até agora, por limitado que seja, bem como realçar algumas das
interrogações mais urgentes que aparecem no horizonte da pesquisa, tendo em conta a
rápida transformação das práticas socioculturais no Portugal actual.
What We Know and What We Are Trying to Find out about
Protestantism in Portugal
Despite various efforts to gain a better understanding of the history of the religious
minorities in Portugal, large gaps still remain which must be filled as quickly as
possible. Indeed, it would appear that we have a better understanding of the period during
which the minorities were systematically and intensely persecuted, than more recent
periods during which a few breathing spaces of tolerance opened up and religious and
liturgical practices which might appear worrying to the conservative pillars of
traditional Portuguese Catholicism spread throughout the country.
Is this really so paradoxical ? Perhaps not. This article seeks to retrace the
progress made so far, however slight it may be, and to highlight some of the more obvious
questions which are appearing on the horizon of research, taking into account the rapid
transformations taking place in the socio-cultural practices of the Portugal of today.
